It’s hard to resist the urge to play crazy fast lines when going after a horn player playing like that. Now I actively try to play slower to counteract what they did. Focus more on sound and group interaction. I would never be so crass as to suggest that music should be complicated in order to be considered legitimate. I would also never firmly declare that MC-ing, DJ-ing, or making beats are not artistic or that they require no actual skill or ability. However, as a lifelong musician, I take issue with unprepared and untrained persons boldly infiltrating and diluting my profession and industry, and displacing scores of qualified individuals in the process. However, since a press package normally includes a CD, it's a good opportunity for a promoter to expand his CD collection at no expense. Like music journalists and critics, it's not uncommon from bookers and concert promoters to live among mountains and shelves of free CDs and books. I happen to know very many, and they all have exceptional and impressive media collections. I was taken back when reading this statement..."An astonishing amount of today’s popular music is written by two people: Lukasz Gottwald of the United States and Max Martin from Sweden."

I recognize that pop is more performance art than musicianship so I get why they're using others to write, but why are two people dominating this space?

It's tragic that our school systems put little value on music appreciation and disappointing that so few care - both school administrators and parents. It costs little or nothing to expose students to all types of music, just an open mind and willingness to do so. They control the programming, so it becomes an issue of "how badly do you want it?" Also, I failed to mention that bio and press packages are often requested by promoters that actually do know who I am, as well as those whom have booked me in the past. The advancement of technology has made it very easy for music to be put together via machines, samples etc....People who cant' play an instrument can become "composers and producers" by having a machine and samples do most of the work. I also fear for the ability of musicians to survive due to technology. The digital age with free downloading and streaming has de-valued music. Fewer and fewer people want to own music as in the past, they want it free or to "rent" it if you will via streaming.

The emergence of Rap and Hip Hop as todays most popular music also plays a role in less musicianship. When I as growing up and learning, I watched and listened to countless musicians. Kids these days attending Rap/Hip Hop shows many times don't even see a musician on stage. I really feel sorry for the younger generation. They are missing out on so much.

Tom O Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-376600789317696393.post-5869374553573816392018-02-20T17:22:10.165-05:002018-02-20T17:22:10.165-05:00Thank You Greg, I stay so frustrated with my music...Thank You Greg, I stay so frustrated with my musicians. They dress any old way. It is so frustrating. I dress nice and they most times just wear anything.
I am going to be sure to share this with all the musicians I know in Ghana.
I use to tell stories of how well dressed the Atlanta Jazz Musicians were and how they even carried their instruments with pride. Also how many of them were teachers or had day jobs and no matter what kind of job they did they still dressed when it came to performing.

They don't want a woman telling them what to do. I have shared stories of how I was always told first impressions are lasting. I tell them they are not taken serious. This is why they can't get what they want.

I hope you don't mind if I use portions of this in a book I am writing about performance.

I am celebrating my 20th anninversary of "Keeping Jazz Alive" in Ghana. Everything about it, the set designs, the lighting, the clothing worn by the performers, the hair styles, accessories, were first class, EXCEPT Ed Sheeran, who was wearing some casual shirt that he might of picked up in the $1.00 segment of the thrift store. Now don't get me wrong, you can get some nice things at the thrift stores, especially in some wealthy neighborhoods, but Ed Sheeran's outfit struck me as being so out of place! His look has it's origins in the hippie movement who were anti establishment, anti parents, etc. Fatigue and ex military surplus clothing were acceptable too. Some people are all style and no substance, some no style, a lot substance and then there are those who dress for the occasion! As a performer, assuming you're not performing for a bunch of "dead heads" or a casual out door festival in the summer, it's always a good idea not to have your appearance detract from your presentation!robert stonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07665465443115623913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-376600789317696393.post-76497415006939305022017-08-14T02:38:38.273-04:002017-08-14T02:38:38.273-04:00Yes! I am a 23year old jazz singer- I have a love/hate relationship with the jam session because it's normally around 2am I feel it appropriate to approach the stage- that's when it calls me- but then just as I get up enough pluck to approach the stage- everyone unplugs and goes home. So this leaves me with an urgency to "rush" the stage. And I feel really bad because a lot of my colleagues who are my age feel so entitled to a jam session- so entitled to the stage. Conclusion: I agree that there is a sense of entitlement unprecedented with players my age. I want to break the cycle - while still getting a glimmer of stage time. I've been reflecting on your post and my actions and feelings about jam sessions and I think my generations wants to change- but we are lost in this ladder climbing, reality TV, "make-it" consumerism generation.
