I would never be so crass as to suggest that music should be complicated in order to be considered legitimate. I would also never firmly declare that MC-ing, DJ-ing, or making beats are not artistic or that they require no actual skill or ability. However, as a lifelong musician, I take issue with unprepared and untrained persons boldly infiltrating and diluting my profession and industry, and displacing scores of qualified individuals in the process. The advancement of technology has made it very easy for music to be put together via machines, samples etc....People who cant' play an instrument can become "composers and producers" by having a machine and samples do most of the work. I also fear for the ability of musicians to survive due to technology. The digital age with free downloading and streaming has de-valued music. Fewer and fewer people want to own music as in the past, they want it free or to "rent" it if you will via streaming.

The emergence of Rap and Hip Hop as todays most popular music also plays a role in less musicianship. When I as growing up and learning, I watched and listened to countless musicians. Kids these days attending Rap/Hip Hop shows many times don't even see a musician on stage. I really feel sorry for the younger generation. They are missing out on so much.

Tom O Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
